About NumberPlates.org

Our involvement with private number plates began in 1993.

The first registration we bought was B5 UED, reading “Be Sued”. It was purchased from the DVLA for just a few hundred pounds and sold a few weeks later through The Times for £3,000 to a lawyer in Liverpool.

That first sale started a long-standing interest in distinctive registrations. Over the following three decades, we have bought, sold, collected and researched number plates across a wide range of formats and values.

But today we are about more than trading registrations.

We are building a permanent research resource for UK number plates – bringing together information that would otherwise be scattered across auction results, old advertisements, publications, vehicle records, photographs and individual collections.

Every registration has a story. Our Timelines are designed to bring that story together.

Individual number plate Timelines sit at the centre of NumberPlates.org.

Search a registration and its Timeline can bring together the history we have discovered for that plate, including:

• Vehicle assignments and changes
• Recorded auction and other sales
• Historic advertisements
• Previous asking prices
• Photographs and sightings
• Auction appearances
• Publicly documented associations
• Marketplace listings
• Other registration-specific evidence

A Timeline is intended to remain the permanent public page for a registration. If the plate is later advertised for sale through NumberPlates.org, its marketplace listing appears on that same page rather than creating a separate registration record.

This means somebody considering buying a registration can see more than an asking price. Where evidence exists, they can also explore what has previously happened to that plate.

Tracking Changes Every Day

Every day, we check hundreds of thousands of UK registrations for changes in publicly available vehicle information. These checks help us identify changes and build more detailed registration Timelines over time.

A vehicle association is not the same thing as identifying the person who owns or keeps a vehicle. NumberPlates.org does not have access to private DVLA registered-keeper information, and our Timelines should not be interpreted as a record of registered keepers.

NumberPlates.org combines its research platform with a marketplace for registrations currently available to buy.

Private owners can currently list a registration for free, and seller commission is permanently zero. Sellers choose their own public asking price and keep the full price they agree with the buyer.

Rather than creating disposable classified-ad pages, a registration for sale is connected to its existing Timeline. That means its current asking price can sit alongside any previous sales, advertisements, photographs or other known history.

For sellers, that means a registration can be discovered by people researching the plate as well as people actively searching the marketplace.

For buyers, it provides more context before making an enquiry or offer.

Private seller contact details are not displayed publicly, and marketplace enquiries are handled through NumberPlates.org.

Asking prices tell you what somebody wants for a registration. Completed sales tell you what buyers have actually paid.

Our Sales Explorer contains more than 330,000 recorded UK number plate sales, bringing together historic prices from DVLA auctions and other documented sales sources.

It can be used to research individual registrations, compare similar plates and study the wider market.

Where a sale relates to a registration with a Timeline, the two can be connected – allowing somebody to move from the market data to the history of the individual plate.

Over time, this data also allows us to investigate questions such as:

• How values have changed over time
• Which registration formats command the highest prices
• How repeat-sale values have changed
• The premium attached to short registrations and low numbers
• How historic asking prices compare with later sales
• How different parts of the private number plate market perform

The internet only captures a small part of the history of the private number plate market.

For decades, registrations were advertised through newspapers, magazines, printed catalogues, specialist publications and dealer lists. Much of that material is difficult to search and, in some cases, difficult to find at all.

The Number Plate Archive is our project to preserve and index that history.

It now contains information from more than 13,000 historic number plate advertisements, alongside collections of original dealer publications and other historical material.

Archive records can reveal:

• Historic asking prices
• When a registration was advertised
• The dealer or private seller advertising it
• The publication in which it appeared
• Registrations that have been marketed repeatedly over many years
• Evidence that can add a previously unknown event to a Timeline

As the Archive grows, we are increasingly able to connect old advertisements directly with the modern Timeline of the registration they featured.

A plate advertised in a newspaper decades ago, sold at auction years later and displayed on a vehicle today can therefore begin to form one continuous historical record.

We also provide free valuations for owners who want to understand what their registration may be worth.

There is no single formula that accurately values every private number plate. We consider factors including the registration format, length, rarity, letters and numbers, readability, buyer demand, comparable completed sales and competing registrations currently available.

Our own sales database and historical records help provide context that asking prices alone cannot.

Depending on the registration, we may also be interested in making a direct cash offer. A cash offer and a market valuation are not the same thing – an immediate purchase offers speed and certainty, while a registration may potentially achieve a higher price if the owner is prepared to wait for the right buyer.

NumberPlates.org also publishes practical guides, market research and news covering the UK registration industry.

Our information section includes guidance on subjects such as transferring and assigning private registrations, registration formats, DVLA processes, number plate history and the rules surrounding their use.

Where a subject involves DVLA procedures, legislation, fees or other information that can change, we aim to verify it against current authoritative sources.

Increasingly, our research also draws on our own datasets rather than simply repeating information already available elsewhere.

That includes historic auction results, repeat sales, archived advertisements and individual registration histories.

Number plate history is rarely contained in a single source.

Depending on the registration, our research may draw on:

Not every piece of evidence proves the same thing.

An advertisement proves that a registration was offered for sale at a particular asking price – it does not prove that it sold for that amount.

A photograph may show a registration displayed on a particular vehicle – it does not identify the vehicle's registered keeper.

A published auction result can establish a sale – an auction catalogue alone only establishes that the registration was offered.

We believe those distinctions matter.

Our aim is to make NumberPlates.org useful not only by collecting more information, but by making it clearer what is known, how it is known and what remains uncertain.

The history of UK registrations is enormous and no database will ever be complete.

Historic material can be missing, difficult to date, incorrectly transcribed or based on information that later turns out to be wrong.

New evidence can help improve the record not just for one registration, but for the wider history of the UK number plate market.

The technology has changed considerably since our first registration was sold through a newspaper advert in 1993.

The fundamentals have not.

A memorable registration can have a history stretching across decades, multiple vehicles, advertisements and sales – and understanding that history can make the market more transparent for everyone.
