Dateless registrations are number plates that do not contain an age or year identifier. Most were originally issued before 1963 and are among the most desirable and valuable UK registrations because they do not reveal the age of the vehicle. They are also considerably scarcer and shorter in length than modern registration formats.

How do I know if my plate is dateless?

A simple way to identify a dateless registration is to look at its first and last characters. One will be a letter and the other will be a number. In other words, the registration will begin with letters and end with numbers, or begin with numbers and end with letters. If it starts and ends with letters then it's not dateless.

Examples include A 1, ABC 1, 1 AB and 123 ABC.

Some private number plates have increased significantly in value, particularly short dateless registrations, single-letter and single-number combinations, recognisable words and desirable initials. However, not every registration will rise in value, and plates should not be treated as a guaranteed investment.

For example, JK 1 sold for a total of £209,300 in July 2024 and then sold again for £336,000 in November 2025. This represents an increase of more than £126,000 in approximately 16 months, although auction fees and selling costs would reduce the owner’s actual return.

Long-term examples can be even more striking. 8 X was issued at a DVLA auction for a total of £3,878 in November 1992. It later sold for £197,800 in September 2021. Even after accounting for inflation, the original purchase price would be equivalent to only around £8,574 today. Today this registration would be worth in excess of £250,000.

The fees depend on where you purchase the registration, so always check whether the advertised price is the final amount payable.

When buying a fixed-price registration directly from the DVLA, VAT and the £80 assignment fee are already included in the advertised price. The only additional cost is having the physical number plates made.

Registrations purchased through a DVLA auction are subject to additional charges. These currently include:

When buying through a number plate dealer or private seller, fees can vary. Some sellers advertise an all-inclusive price, while others add VAT, transfer fees, administration charges or commission. Always request a full breakdown of the total cost before agreeing to purchase.

A private registration can generally be assigned to a suitable DVLA-registered vehicle, but it cannot make the vehicle appear newer than it is. For example, a registration containing a 26 age identifier (2026) cannot be placed on a vehicle first registered before that identifier became valid (cannot be placed on a vehicle registered in 2025 or earlier). Different rules apply to Q-registered and non-transferable vehicles.

Yes. A private registration can be held on a valid V750 certificate or V778 retention document until you are ready to assign it to a suitable vehicle. These documents are valid for ten years and can be renewed free of charge.

When buying a registration, the simplest way to complete the transfer is usually to assign it directly to a vehicle you own. If you do not have a suitable vehicle, a registration broker may be able to assist, although this can involve additional time and costs. Although the certificate still won't appear in your name, which could be less secure.
