Number plate sale prices can vary enormously, even within the same registration format.
To reduce the effect of exceptional results, we calculate a rolling typical sale price using a trimmed average. For each category, the highest and lowest 10% of qualifying sale prices are removed before calculating the average of the remaining results.
Each monthly figure uses the previous 12 months of completed sales. Where a category has fewer than 50 sales in that time the window widens to 24 months, then 36 months; if there are still fewer than 10 sales, no figure is shown for that month. We use the total price paid including buyer's premium and fees, and exclude multi-plate lots and duplicate records.
The index is updated monthly using completed sales recorded by NumberPlates.org. Where sufficient historic data exists, each category is rebased to December 1989 = 100. Categories without reliable data from December 1989 begin at their first reliable period.
Prefix, suffix and current-style registrations contain much wider variations in quality and desirability than the shorter dateless categories. Their index values should therefore be treated as broad market indicators.
Use the graph to compare how different registration formats have performed historically, in pounds or as an index from a common starting point.
