'This registration number cannot be assigned / retained online' Fix

'This registration number cannot be assigned / retained online' Fix

Why This Happens

This usually happens for a few reasons – most commonly because the vehicle hasn't been continuously taxed over the past five years, or it has been declared SORN during that time. The DVLA sometimes want to do additional checks because of this.

How to Fix it

You will need to send a postal application with the correct forms to the DVLA. It can take up to two weeks for a reply.

If you're attempting to assign a plate, you will need to send the DVLA:

  • The completed V778 (Retention Document [green]) or V750 (Certificate of Entitlement [pink])
  • The V5C Registration Certificate (log book)

Note: all documents must be originals, not photocopies.

If you're attempting to retain a plate, you will need to send the DVLA:

  • The completed V317 document
  • The V5C Registration Certificate (log book)

Note: all documents must be originals, not photocopies.

You are unable to continue with this application online.

We need to look into your application further due to the vehicle's licensing history.

Please send a V317 application, and the V5C registration certificate (logbook) to:
